Spotlighting EmBe’s Summer Interns
Summer brings a new crop of interns to our organization, and we wasted no time getting to know them. With so many questions and much less time, we narrowed this Q&A to five questions and let their insightful answers speak for themselves.
While we already know how our mission may seed success in their life, we’re also uncovering their desire to sew their seeds into our communities.
Without further ado, meet EmBe’s 2022 Summer Interns!
Tell us a bit about yourself:
Aybree: I am 22 years old, and I recently started working as the interim School Age Care Manager for EmBe of Mitchell. I enjoy spending time with my family, watching movies, meeting new people, and experiencing new things.
Makenna: I was born and raised in Sioux Falls, and I attended Roosevelt High School, where I played volleyball all four years. I love to go shopping, work out, go camping, and hang out with my friends and family outside of work.
Shannon: I am from Chamberlain, SD. I enjoy spending time with friends and my dog, and I like to travel and see new places.
Megan: I am originally from Lennox, South Dakota. As a fifth-year senior for school and golf next year, I will attend Dakota Wesleyan University in Mitchell, South Dakota.
What are you going to school for?
Aybree: I recently graduated from Dakota Wesleyan University with a BA in psychology, a concentration in counseling, and a minor in religious studies.
Makenna: I attend the University of South Dakota, majoring in business administration and minoring in marketing.
Shannon: I graduated from Mitchell Technical Institute with degrees in business management and accounting.
Megan: I got my degree in business administration with a concentration in management and a minor in psychology. I am now pursuing my master’s degree in business administration.
What interests you in that field?
Aybree: I am very passionate about working with people, and psychology provided an avenue for me to explore multiple career options that would allow me to help people.
Makenna: As a business administration major, I like that it is a bit broader scope of work, and I can do various jobs. I love to learn new things, and I think my major offers me that.
Shannon: I like to be organized and can work very well with numbers. I also enjoy completing tasks as I receive them.
Megan: I love working on a team and being a leader. I love learning about how teams work and the strategic side of teams. I also am looking forward to the professional and personal growth that this field offers.
What interested you in EmBe?
Aybree: I have always enjoyed working with children of all ages, and it allowed me to get more childcare experience as I finished college.
Makenna: I love that EmBe is a non-profit, and I think it does so much for the community. I love that the goal is to empower all women and kids, and we help women be successful.
Shannon: I enjoy working with kids, wanted to gain more experience, and establish good relationships with them.
Megan: EmBe has excellent values and a great mission. They lead by empowering women, which drew me to the EmBe. I didn’t think there was a better place to learn about leadership than from a place that gives everyone the chance to be a leader.
What are your career goals?
Aybree: I am currently exploring different career options that would allow me to work with kids. Within the next year, I would like to work as a paraprofessional to gain experience working with kids with developmental challenges. Ideally, I would love to work in an administrative position at a non-profit organization that focuses on helping children in some capacity.
Makenna: I took this internship to explore more of what I want in my future career. One thing I do want to accomplish is being able to help my community grow and be its best self.
Shannon: I hope to one day have my master’s in psychology and work in the criminal justice system.
Megan: I would like to work my way up to a leadership position at a bank.
Bonus Question: What three items would you take to a deserted island?
Aybree: The first thing I would take is a journal to document all my adventures for someone to find someday, hopefully. The second thing I would bring is a book to keep me entertained. The third thing I would bring with me is a blanket because I like to sleep.
Makenna: I would bring my dog to have some company, a solar-powered radio so I can listen to music, and a floatie.
Shannon: My favorite book, a compass, and a boat
Megan: My dog, my phone, and water.
